Chennai: "Do
you know how to draw cartoons?" asks the experienced cartoonist
Rahnu. One automatically shakes his head in the negative. His
next question, "Can you draw the letter `C'?" And
that's very easy to do he tells you to draw `C' small and big,
in five places on the rough paper. And bingo, using his special
sketch pen, he transforms the five `Cs' into five different
cartoon faces. He is regularly conducting regular coaching from
the past two decades. Mr. Rahnu is also the founder-president
of the Rahnu Cartoon Research and Educational Trust. Spending
six years in the School of Arts and specializing in portraits
and landscape paintings, he has conducted over 2,000 programmes
in India and abroad.
His take is that cartoon is not a Western art, but has existed
in ancient India. "The scarecrow that you see in the fields
is a type of cartoon. The same are the images of demons in temple
gopurams," he says, pointing out that the "Vahanas"
or mythological vehicles of gods such as the horse or peacock
will have exaggerated features.
Mr.Rahnu is conducting drawing and cartoon animation classes
in association with Keltron animation campus (KAC), Chennai.
He has identified KAC as a potential organization giving core
education and training in the field of multimedia and animation.
He has been conducting various programs in Chennai in association
with KAC since the opening of KAC in Chennai.
